Impossible: to make VB6 form controls international?

I have an application developed in MS Visual Basic 6. It uses form items (controls) and form items (controls) from the common controls library MSCOMCTL.OCX. The form controls each can be chosen a "character set" for to define what characters can be used in the controls, and it is impossible to use Japanese characteres in a form control set to "Western" character set. There was no UTF-8 support back in the days for these controls. Is it possible to somehow make the form items and the common controls library MSCOMCTL.OCX form items compatible with each language? Right now, when I try to give a Japanese character as input, a question mark is displayed in the form item (control).
